Liquid Gold: The Story of Distillerie Berta & After-Dinner Fine Dining at San Pietro

In Italian culinary tradition, an exceptional meal never simply ends when the last plate is cleared. The final, most cherished act of true Italian dining is the digestivo—a quiet moment to linger over fine spirits, reflect on great conversation, and savor authentic hospitality.

At San Pietro Ristorante, we take this tradition to its absolute peak. Alongside our classic selection of amari and dessert wines, our bar shelf proudly features some of Italy’s most prized liquid gold: the rare, oak-aged reserve grappas from the legendary Distillerie Berta.

A Shared Passion for Heritage & Craftsmanship

Much like San Pietro’s own roots in the rich traditions of the Amalfi Coast and Campania, Distillerie Berta’s story is grounded in deep family passion. Founded in 1947 by Paolo Berta in the rolling hills of Mombaruzzo d'Asti, Piedmont, the distillery completely revolutionized how the world views grappa.

Rather than treating grappa as a harsh countryside spirit, Berta pioneered the art of long, patient aging in French oak casks. The result is a refined, velvety spirit that rivals the world's finest aged Cognacs, armagnacs, and single-malt whiskies.

Three Reserve Icons Featured at San Pietro

When you dine with us on East 54th Street, we invite you to complete your meal with three of Berta’s most extraordinary single-crop reserve vintages:

  • Riserva Paolo Berta (The Founder's Reserve): Aged for a remarkable 20 years in custom wooden barrels, this rich amber spirit opens with aromas of ripe fruit, cacao, and warm vanilla. It stands as the absolute crown jewel of the Berta family craft.

  • Bric del Gaian: Distilled from single-varietal Moscato grapes and gently matured in oak, offering an remarkably elegant profile filled with notes of sweet grapefruit, forest berries, and subtle spices.

  • Tre Soli Tre: Crafted from Nebbiolo pomace -the noble grape behind Barolo- this full-bodied, robust grappa yields deep notes of black currant, dark chocolate, and toasted almond.

The Perfect Ending to Your Evening

Whether paired with our signature house-made Tiramisù, crisp Sfogliatella, or delicate Millefoglie, accompanied by a rich espresso, or enjoyed simply on its own as a meditation drink, a pour of Berta Reserve transforms dinner into an unforgettable experience.

On your next visit to San Pietro for lunch, dinner, or a private event, ask our sommelier for a glass of Berta Grappa.
